Q&A Pastors

Question:

So, are there pastors out there that are preaching and not being led by the Holy Spirit?

Answer:

There are times when everyone is guilty of not being led by the Holy Spirit, or more to the point, not following the leading of the Holy Spirit.

On the other hand, there are those who are supposed to be shepherding the flock of God but they are fleecing the flock or they have never been called to the work but rather sent themselves or were sent by men.  That assures that they will not be able to lead since they themselves are walking in rebellion.

The real danger is in the locally abiding paid pastor.  This is clearly and extra-biblical office.  The local elders (plural) are told to shepherd (care for as a shepherd cares for sheep) the flock of God.  There are some basic differences between the idea of the paid pastor and the local elders.

  • Pastors are paid.  The pattern in the Scripture includes no money for the local elders and deacons.
  •
  • Pastors tend to be singular.  If there are multiple pastors, there is usually a chief pastor or head pastor.  There isno such concept in Scripture.  The elders work together and share the mantle of the office.
  •
  • Pastors tend to be hired and can be fired if they teach things that the people don't want to hear.  Elders are indicated by the Holy Spirit, set in office for life by prophecy and the laying on of hands of the apostles.
  •
  • Pastors usually have no one to balance them or keep them from teaching false doctrine.  Elders balance each other and correct each other.  Elders only teach the apostle's doctrine.
  •
  • Pastors govern the church in a democracy, an oligarchy, or a monarchy.  None of these are biblical.  Elders govern the Church in a theocracy.  God rules through them.
