An intellectual was speaking about why He is a Christian. He brought up many philosophical, historical, and scientific reasons to believe. Then, he spoke of his own personal experience with Christ. When Christ showed Himself to the man in dreams and visions, the man came to Christ. Then the man was asked a question about the age of the Earth. The man was university-trained and probably had much teaching about billions of years and evolution, so this was a hard question for him. He had already said that the Bible was the Word of God and without error, but now we hit part of his own worldview. He brought up the fact that the Sun was made after light had been created and indicated that, in his mind, this made this part of the Bible out of sync with reality. So, what were his assumptions? God could not have been the light source as He is in Revelation? God could not have had an alternate light source for the evening and the morning? There is nothing that God knows about this that we don't know? When a Christian, especially a high-profile Christian, says that they believe the Bible is without error and then turns around and starts to rationalize parts of it away because those parts of the Bible are not to the Christian's liking, this can cause many people to turn from Christ. It teaches inconsistent thinking. We know that the Bible is the Word of God without error by revelation. Then, God confirms that to us through the Bible. It isn't something we prove to ourselves by science and logic. Science and logic, though wonderful tools that God has supplied, are quite limited because we have very limited ability to observe anything or to know anything. We are totally dependent on revelation for knowledge. In Christ is hidden all knowledge. It's understandable that a person would do what this man did. There is tremendous pressure on the university campuses against the biblical account of the creation and the flood, even as the Bible said there would be. There is willing ignorance, and there are definite consequences to being faithful to Christ. We should pray for people who are struggling with their faith. We are not dogmatically claiming to know that the Earth is 6,000 years old. We know that God created the Heavens and the Earth in six days and we know the number of generations between Adam and Christ. That's about it. Even though a plain reading of Scripture seems to indicate a young Earth; even though there is zero observed evidence and only circular reasoning and speculations that support old Earth stories, we can't even deny the possibility that God could have done something that Scripture doesn't hint at and that has left no scientific evidence. It is possible. It just is not worth the time to think about it.
