Definition of Adjure from Vine's Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words which is keyed to the English Version (1881-1885), which is similare to the ASV 1901 (American Standard Version) <1,,3726,horkizo>"to cause to swear, to lay under the obligation of an oath" (horkos, Mark 5:7; Acts 19:13), is connected with the Heb. word for a thigh, cp. Gen. 24:2,9; 47:29. Some mss. have this word in 1 Thess. 5:27. The most authentic have No. 3 (below). See CHARGE. <2,,1844,exorkizo>

Note: The synonymous verb omnumi signifies "to make an oath, to declare or promise with an oath." See, e.g., Mark 6:23, in contrast to Mark 5:7 (horkizo). See OATH and SWEAR.
