1 Therefore, seeing that we are also surrounded with such a great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every burden and all wandering from the path that skillfully surrounds us. Run the race that is set before us with perseverance,
2 turning our eyes away from other things and focusing them toward Jesus, the One Who begins and fully completes our supernatural belief and trust, Who, because of the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross, thinking little or nothing of the shame, and is now sitting down at the Right Hand of the Throne of God. *
3 For consider Him Who endured such opposition of wicked people against Himself, so that you don't become weary and weak in your minds.
4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, fighting against wandering from the path and missing the mark.
5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to children, "My mature son,  don't take the chastening of the Lord lightly. Don't become despondent when you are rebuked by Him,
6 for whomever the Lord loves He chastens and scourges every mature son whom He receives.
7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with mature sons; for what mature son is he whom the Father doesn't chasten?
8But if you are without chastisement, of which all are partakers, then you are illegitimate children, and not mature sons.
9 Furthermore we have had fathers, our flesh and blood, who corrected us, and we gave them reverence. Shouldn't we much more willingly be in obedience to the Father of spirits and live?
10 For they truly did chasten us for a few days as it seemed right to them, but He for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness.
11 Now no chastening for the present seems to be an occasion for joy, but an occasion for grief. Nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them who are vigorously exercised in themselves.
12 Therefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees
13 and make upright paths for your feet, so that the lame don't stray from the path, but rather are totally cured.
14 Run swiftly toward harmony with each and every person and holiness, without which no one can see the Lord,
15 diligently seeing to it that no one has too little of the divine power for righteousness, holiness, and redemption of God; seeing to it that no root of wickedness springs up and troubles you, and, by this wickedness, many are contaminated;
16 seeing to it that no one fornicates or is ungodly, as Esau, who sold his birthright for one meal.
17 For you know how it is indeed truth that afterward, when he desired to have received the blessing, he was rejected, for he found place for a renewed mind, though he sought it carefully with tears.
18 For you have not come to the mountain that you can touch and feel and burning with fire and gloom and darkness and a sudden storm
19 and the sound of a trumpet, and the sound of a voice uttering words, which [voice] those who heard begged that the utterance should not be spoken to them any more.
20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, and if so much as an animal touched the mountain, it had to be stoned or shot down with a spear.
21 And the sight was so terrible that Moses said, "I'm shaking with fear.")
22 However, you have come to Mount Zion, and to the City of the living God, the Heavenly Jerusalem, and to an unlimited number of angels,
23 to the general assembly and Church of the firstborn, who are written in Heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made complete,
24 and to Jesus the One Who intervenes with the new arrangement of inheritance, and to the sprinkled blood that utters better things than [the blood] of Abel.
25 Discern and don't avoid Him Who speaks. For if those who avoided Him Who spoke on Earth didn't escape, it will be much worse if we turn away from allegiance to Him Who speaks from Heaven,
26 Whose Voice then shook the Earth, but now He has promised, saying, "Yet once more I shake, not only the Earth, but also Heaven.
27 And this utterance, "Yet once more," reveals a change of those things that are shaken and thrown down, like things that were created, so that those things which cannot be shaken or thrown down may remain.
28 Therefore, since we receive a Kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have divine power for righteousness, holiness, and redemption, by which we serve God in a way that is well-pleasing [to Him], with respectful reverence and godly awe:
29 For our God is a consuming fire. * *

Young's Literal

1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.
4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin.
5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected [us], and we gave [them] reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
10 For they verily for a few days chastened [us] after their own pleasure; but he for [our] profit, that [we] might be partakers of his holiness.
11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.
12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
14 Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble [you], and thereby many be defiled;
16 Lest there [be] any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which [voice] they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
21 And so terrible was the sight, [that] Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than [that of] Abel.
25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more [shall not] we [escape], if we turn away from him that [speaketh] from heaven:
26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
27 And this [word], Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
29 For our God [is] a consuming fire.

King James Version

1 Therefore, we also having so great a cloud of witnesses set around us, every weight having put off, and the closely besetting sin, through endurance may we run the contest that is set before us,
2 looking to the author and perfecter of faith -- Jesus, who, over-against the joy set before him -- did endure a cross, shame having despised, on the right hand also of the throne of God did sit down;
3 for consider again him who endured such gainsaying from the sinners to himself, that ye may not be wearied in your souls -- being faint.
4 Not yet unto blood did ye resist -- with the sin striving;
5 and ye have forgotten the exhortation that doth speak fully with you as with sons, 'My son, be not despising chastening of the Lord, nor be faint, being reproved by Him,
6 for whom the Lord doth love He doth chasten, and He scourgeth every son whom He receiveth;'
7 if chastening ye endure, as to sons God beareth Himself to you, for who is a son whom a father doth not chasten?
8 and if ye are apart from chastening, of which all have become partakers, then bastards are ye, and not sons.
9 Then, indeed, fathers of our flesh we have had, chastising [us], and we were reverencing [them]; shall we not much rather be subject to the Father of the spirits, and live?
10 for they, indeed, for a few days, according to what seemed good to them, were chastening, but He for profit, to be partakers of His separation;
11 and all chastening for the present, indeed, doth not seem to be of joy, but of sorrow, yet afterward the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those exercised through it -- it doth yield.
12 Wherefore, the hanging-down hands and the loosened knees set ye up;
13 and straight paths make for your feet, that that which is lame may not be turned aside, but rather be healed;
14 peace pursue with all, and the separation, apart from which no one shall see the Lord,
15 looking diligently over lest any one be failing of the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up may give trouble, and through this many may be defiled;
16 lest any one be a fornicator, or a profane person, as Esau, who in exchange for one morsel of food did sell his birthright,
17 for ye know that also afterwards, wishing to inherit the blessing, he was disapproved of, for a place of reformation he found not, though with tears having sought it.
18 For ye came not near to the mount touched and scorched with fire, and to blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
19 and a sound of a trumpet, and a voice of sayings, which those having heard did entreat that a word might not be added to them,
20 for they were not bearing that which is commanded, 'And if a beast may touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or with an arrow shot through,'
21 and, (so terrible was the sight,) Moses said, 'I am fearful exceedingly, and trembling.'
22 But, ye came to Mount Zion, and to a city of the living God, to the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of messengers,
23 to the company and assembly of the first-born in heaven enrolled, and to God the judge of all, and to spirits of righteous men made perfect,
24 and to a mediator of a new covenant -- Jesus, and to blood of sprinkling, speaking better things than that of Abel!
25 See, may ye not refuse him who is speaking, for if those did not escape who refused him who upon earth was divinely speaking -- much less we who do turn away from him who [speaketh] from heaven,
26 whose voice the earth shook then, and now hath he promised, saying, 'Yet once -- I shake not only the earth, but also the heaven;'
27 and this -- 'Yet once' -- doth make evident the removal of the things shaken, as of things having been made, that the things not shaken may remain;
28 wherefore, a kingdom that cannot be shaken receiving, may we have grace, through which we may serve God well-pleasingly, with reverence and religious fear;
29 for also our God [is] a consuming fire.
