1 And He went out from there and came into His own country, and His disciples followed Him. 2 And when the Sabbath Day had come, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many, hearing Him, were astonished, saying, "Where does this Man get these things from and what wisdom is this that is given to Him that such powerful miracles are performed by His Hands? 3 Isn't this the Carpenter, the Son of Mary, the Brother of James and Joses and of Juda and Simon, and aren't His sisters here with us?" And they stumbled regarding Him. 4 But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and among his own kin and in his own house." 5 And He couldn't do any mighty work there except that He laid His hands upon a few sick people and healed them. 6 And He marveled because of their unbelief. And He went about teaching on every side of the villages. 7 And He called the 12 to Him and began to send them out 2 by 2 and gave them power over unclean spirits. 8 And commanded them that they should take nothing for their journey except only a staff--to take no sack, no bread, no money in their purse, 9 but to wear sandals and not to put on 2 coats. 10 And He said to them, "Wherever you enter into a house, stay there until you leave that place. 11 And whoever shall not receive you and not hear you, when you leave that place, shake off the dust under your feet for a witness against them. Truly I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the Day of Judgment than for that city." 12 And they went out and proclaimed with authority that people should have a new mind. 13 And they cast out many devils and anointed many who were sick with oil and healed them. 14 And King Herod heard about Him (for His name was plainly known in the open), and King Herod said that John the Baptist had risen from the dead, and for this reason powerful miracles are operative in Him. 15 Others said that it is Elijah, and others said that it is a prophet or as one of the prophets. 16 But when Herod heard, he said, "It is John whom I beheaded; he has risen from the dead." 17 For Herod himself had ordered the arrest of John and bound him in chains in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife, for he had married her. 18 For John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife." 19 Therefore Herodias held a grudge against him and desired to have killed him but she couldn't, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just and a holy man, and preserved him, and having heard him, he acted on many things and paid attention to him with joy. 21 And when an opportune time had come, when Herod made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee, on his birthday, 22 and when Herodias' daughter came in and danced and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, "Ask me for whatever you desire, and I will give it you." 23 And he swore to her, "Whatever you shall ask me for, I will give it you, to half of my kingdom." 24 And she left and said to her mother, "What shall I ask for?" And Herodias said, "The head of John the Baptist." 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the King, and asked, saying, "I desire that you give me, Herodias, the head of John the Baptist in a platter immediately." 26 And the King was exceedingly sorry; but for his oath's sake and for the sake of those who sat with him, he would not reject her request. 27 And the King sent an executioner immediately and commanded his head to be brought, and he went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 And brought his head in a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 And when his disciples heard about it, they came and took up his corpse and laid it in a tomb. 30 And the apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus and told Him everything, both what was done and what they had taught. 31 And He said to them, "You yourselves come apart into a deserted place and rest awhile." for there were many coming and going, and they had no opportunity to even eat. 32 And they departed by ship into a deserted place privately. 33 And the people saw them departing and many recognized Him and ran there by foot out of all cities and went ahead of them and came together to Him. 34 And Jesus, when He came out, saw many people and was moved with compassion toward them because they were like sheep not having a shepherd, and He began to teach them many things. 35 And when the day was now far spent, His disciples came to Him and said, "This is a deserted place, and now the time is late. 36 Send them away so that they may go into the country on every side and into the villages and buy themselves food, for they have nothing to eat." 37 He answered and said to them, "You give them something to eat." And they said to Him, "Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of food and give them something to eat?" 38 He said to them, "How many loaves do you have? Go and see." And when they found out, they said, "Five, and two fish." 39 And He commanded them to have them all sit down by rows on the green grass. 40 And they sat down in divisions of hundreds and of fifties. 41 And when He had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, He looked up to Heaven and blessed and broke the loaves and gave them to His disciples to set before them, and He divided the two fish among them all. 42 And they all ate and were filled. 43 And they picked up twelve baskets full of fragments and of fish. 44 And those who ate of the loaves were about five thousand men. 45 And He immediately required His disciples to get into the ship and to go to the other side, proceeding to Bethsaida while He sent the people away. 46 And when He had sent them away, He went into a mountain to pray. 47 And when evening had come, the ship was in the middle of the sea and He alone on the land. 48 And He saw them toiling in rowing, for the wind was against to them, and, about the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed by them. 49 But when they saw Him walking on the sea, they thought He was a ghost and cried out, 50 for they all saw Him and were troubled. And immediately He talked with them and said to them, "Be of good cheer; it is I; don't be afraid." 51 And He went up to them into the ship; and the wind ceased, and they were exceedingly amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. 52 For they didn't consider the miracle of the loaves, for their innermost minds were hardened. 53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and moored the ship. 54 And when they had come out of the ship, the people immediately recognized Him, 55 and ran through that whole region on every side, and began to carry about those who were sick in beds to where they heard He was. 56 And wherever He entered into villages or cities or country, they laid the sick in the streets and begged Him that they might touch even the border of His clothing, and as many as touched Him were made well.
