There is little that will give you more stress or unhappiness than to go against your conscience. Happiness is like a kiss--to appreciate it you must give it to somebody else. Happiness is not a station at which you arrive but a manner of traveling. Happiness is not given but exchanged. It isn't your position that makes you happy or unhappy; it's your disposition. The city of happiness is in the state of mind. The constitution guarantees you the pursuit of happiness but doesn't guarantee to finance the chase. Chuck Colson noted: "Our founding fathers understood the pursuit of happiness to mean the pursuit of a virtuous life." Virtue is goodness. Jesus said, "There is none good but God." Paul indicated that righteousness is a free gift from God and that it is grace that does good works through us, not we ourselves. He also says that it is faith that gives access to grace, and that faith comes by hearing the word (literally, utterance) of God. Jesus said, "My sheep hear My Voice." The optimist is as often wrong as the pessimist but is far happier. Think how happy you would be if you lost everything, then got it back again. If you want to be happy, today, make an investment in someone else's happiness. You will probably be happy in the same degree as you are helpful to others. If you want to be happy, follow the ten commandments. He who laughs lasts. A thoroughly enjoyed vacation often stimulates your aspirations. Solitude is fine, but it's usually more fun enjoying it with somebody else. Live to do good and you will never tire of your employment.
