| v.3-8 The Real You |
|
Romans 12:3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. 12:4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 12:5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; 12:7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; 12:8 Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
Think about yourself according to reality. If you are in Christ, you are a new creature. Realize that you are a member of the Body of Christ. The gifts of which Paul is writing are the Gifts of the Spirit that are mentioned 1 Corinthians 12. These are given by prophecy and the laying on of hands of those who have been called for this purpose according to the pattern of Scripture. They are not given by being born again, by taking a test, or by any other extra-biblical method. For those who have not had the brethren come and lay hands on them and prophesy concerning their gifts, will be the outworking of the righteousness of Christ in their lives, which is also a gift. Righteousness is a gift from God. There are also natural gifts that become part of your ministry, such as musical ability, speaking ability, organizational talents, and such like. Think about yourself according to your ministry, not according to any imagined self-image or according to your sinful nature.
