Denying a Conjunct

Logical Fallacy of Denying a Conjunct

Denying the conjunct is a formal fallacy that covers up the problem when reasoning is based on one of the three fallacies of Agrippa's trilemma. Whenever a logical fallacy is committed, the fallacy has its roots in Agrippa's trilemma. All human thought (without Divine revelation) is based on one of three unhappy possibilities. These three possibilities are infinite regress, circular reasoning, or axiomatic thinking. This problem is known as Agrippa's trilemma. Some have claimed that only logic and math can be known without Divine revelation; however, that is not true. There is no reason to trust either logic or math without Divine revelation. Science is also limited to the pragmatic because of the weakness on human reasoning, which is known as Agrippa's trilemma.

The logical fallacy of denying a conjunct occurs when it is claimed that two things cannot both be true and then concludes that because one of the things is not true the other has to be true.

Invalid Logical Form:

"Not both S and P.

Not S.

Therefore P." (Fallacy of denying the conjunct)

Examples of the Logical Fallacy of Denying a Conjunct

"Mr. O. is not both a Muslim and an Atheist."

"Mr. O. is not a Muslim."

"Therefore, Mr. O. is an Atheist."

(Mr. O. could well be a New Age Occultist and neither an Atheist nor a Muslim.)

"Al is not both a fiscal conservative and a moral conservative."

"Al is not a fiscal conservative."

"Therefore, Al is a moral conservative."

(There is nothing in these statements that indicates that Al is a moral conservative. Watch how he lives and you will know.)
