Positive Conclusion from Negative Premises

Logical Fallacy of Negative Premise / Illicit Negative / Drawing a Positive Conclusion from Negative Premises

Illicit negative is a formal fallacy that covers up the problem when reasoning is based on one of the three fallacies of Agrippa's trilemma. Whenever a logical fallacy is committed, the fallacy has its roots in Agrippa's trilemma. All human thought (without Divine revelation) is based on one of three unhappy possibilities. These three possibilities are infinite regress, circular reasoning, or axiomatic thinking. This problem is known as Agrippa's trilemma. Some have claimed that only logic and math can be known without Divine revelation; however, that is not true. There is no reason to trust either logic or math without Divine revelation. Science is also limited to the pragmatic because of the weakness on human reasoning, which is known as Agrippa's trilemma.

A logical fallacy of negative premise occurs when the conclusion of a standard form categorical syllogism is affirmative and one or more of the premises are negative. To be valid form, a categorical syllogism that has a negative premise must have a negative conclusion.

Major Premise: "A is not a subset of B."

Minor Premise: "B is/is not a subset of C."

Conclusion: "Therefore, A is a subset of C."

Examples of the Logical Fallacy of Negative Premise / Illicit Negative / Drawing a Positive Conclusion from Negative Premises

Major Premise: "No papers containing reference to creation or Creator will be published in secular journals."

Minor Premise: "All articles published in secular journals are peer reviewed by like-minded people on this issue."

Conclusion: "Therefore, all articles published in secular journals will contain reverence to creation or Creator."

This is obviously false, but changing the word, all, in the conclusion to the word, no, would make it valid form and sound reasoning.

Major Premise: "No professors at this university who don't fully support molecules-to-man evolution will be given tenure."

Minor Premise: "All professors who are given tenure are guaranteed a position for life."

Conclusion: "Therefore, all professors at this university who don't fully support molecules-to-man evolution are guaranteed a position for life."

This is obviously false, but changing the word, all, in the conclusion to the word, no, would make it valid form and sound reasoning.
