Irrelevant Conclusion

Logical Fallacy of Ignoratio Elenchi / Irrelevant Conclusion

The logical fallacy of ignoratio elenci / irrelevant conclusion occurs when an argument proving an irrelevant point is claimed to have proved the point at issue.

Examples of the Logical Fallacy of Ignoratio Elenchi / Irrelevant Conclusion

"Of course we have evidence that molecules-to-man evolution actually happened. We have observed speciation."

We have observed speciation, but that has nothing to do with molecules-to-man evolution. Speciation is the loss of information. Molecules-to-man evolution is a story about the constant addition of new, innovative, helpful information, which has never been observed. Only loss of information or destruction of information has been observed.

"We do too have examples of information being added to the cell by random processes. We have observed both duplication of information and mutation."

But this never adds information of the kind necessary for evolution, so it is irrelevant.

"You don't partake of Christ's Body in the communion. After all, how much flesh and blood does this guy Jesus actually have to give?"

By mixing the spiritual with the natural, the author has committed the logical fallacy of Ignoratio Elenchi in that he has brought up a premise using naturalistic presuppositions so that premise is irrelevant to the spiritual reality. This example came from an Atheist site the is trying to teach logic to atheists.
