Wholehearted

 

Many Scriptures tell us to be wholehearted. The double-minded will receive nothing from the Lord. Be not deceived. God is not mocked.

It's very easy to get this wrong. To be wholehearted is not to give total human effort but to give total submission to the Spirit of God. It is to stand in His Presence and to direct our minds toward Him in respect and submission. When we do this, He speaks. When He speaks, faith comes. When faith comes, it gives us access into His Grace. When His Grace comes, It thinks His Thoughts, speaks His Words, and does His Works through us.

Books have been written and have become popular that get this wrong. They never realize that being born again and growing up into the fullness of Christ are both accomplished by God, not by us.

Revelations 3:14 And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, "These things says the Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God; *
15 I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot: I wish you were either cold or hot.
16 So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spit you out of My Mouth.
17 Because you say, 'I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing;' and you don't know that you are afflicted, and to be pitied, and destitute of the Christian virtues and eternal riches, and mentally blind, and naked:
18 I counsel you to buy gold from Me that has been melted by fire and purged of dross so that you may be rich, and brilliantly white clothing so that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness isn't so obviously  visible. And anoint the eyes of your mind with eye salve so that you will be able to perceive with your senses.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Burn with zeal therefore, and have a new mind.
20 I stand at the door, and knock. If anyone hears My Voice, and opens the door, I will come in to that one and will eat with that one and that one will eat with Me. *
21 To the one who overcomes I will give the gift to sit with Me in My Throne, in the same way as I also overcame and sat down with My Father in His Throne.
22 Whoever has an ear, let that person hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

Amos 6: 1a Woe to those who are at ease in Zion [a type of the Church], and trust in the mountain of Samaria [a type of the secular and of compromised philosophy]. . .

What does it mean to be at ease or lukewarm?

Rate yourself on a scale of 1-10, 1 being cold and 10 being hot toward Christ.  A 5 would be lukewarm. You may also note that you are not consistent, that is, you don't have stability yet. Pray, and God will give you that over time.

I am satisfied with my level of spiritual maturity.

I have an understanding of Scripture and spiritual concepts that is good enough.

I have everything that I need spiritually.

God has revealed the fullness of what I will ever need to know. He's not calling me higher.

There is no need to press on to higher heights and deeper depths in Jesus.

My religion is very important to me, but Jesus isn’t the main focus of my mind.

I try to obey rules by human effort--rather than standing in the presence of God seeking Him with my entire mind in holy awe until God’s righteousness springs up within me.

I want to get really close to God, but not all the time and not in a way that makes me change everything about my life.

During a church meeting, I don’t fully give myself over to the Spirit of God.

Isaiah 29:13 Therefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near Me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor Me, but have removed their mind far from Me, and their reverence toward Me is learned by the rules of mankind.

I try to blend in with the ungodly just to get along. I don’t want persecution, so I try to blend in.

I don’t say what God drops into my mind for fear of being persecuted.

I avoid taking a stand because I know that ungodly people, and even some church people, may attack me for standing strong with Christ.

I want to fit in, both inside and outside the church.

I sometimes do what makes me popular rather than what is right.

I sometimes say what others want to hear even if that is not what Christ says.

I care more about what people think than what God thinks about me.

Luke 6:26 Woe to you, when everyone speaks well of you! For this is what their fathers did to the false prophets.

Revelation 3:1 I know the things you have done, that you have a reputation that you have vital power, but you are spiritually dead.

I don’t really want to be set free from my sinful nature completely.

I think that certain parts of my sinful nature have value or supply something I want or need.

I don’t really think that sin is all that terrible.

I sometimes forget that sin is walking from the narrow way that leads to the absolute and genuine life of the coming Kingdom Age. I forget that it is the opposite of love, that God is Love, that righteousness is Christ and that there is no other source of goodness than God.

I sometimes defend my sins rather than confessing them.

I say, “No one is perfect,” or some other phase to justify myself, how I think, and what I do.

I know that many things in my life are not exactly what God wants them to be, but I don’t think it’s all that important.

I don’t cry out for deliverance from the sinful nature and I don’t passionately and enthusiastically desire righteousness and painfully feel my  lack of righteousness and eagerly long for holiness.

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger (passionately and enthusiastically desire) and thirst for (painfully feel their lack of and eagerly long for)  righteousness, for they shall be fully satisfied.

Romans 6:1-7 What shall we say then? Shall we continue to stray from the narrow way that leads to life so that divine power for righteousness, holiness, and redemption may abound? God forbid. How shall we, who are dead to sin, live any longer in sin? Don't you know that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we are buried with Him by baptism into death so that, in the same way as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, in the same way we also should walk in newness of genuine and absolute fullness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall also be in the likeness of His Resurrection, knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him so that the body of sin becomes inoperative so that from now on we don't serve as slaves of sin. For whoever is dead is freed from sin.

I’m reluctant to testify of my walk with Jesus because I don’t want to be rejected.

I’m reluctant to tell others about Jesus because I don’t want others to feel uncomfortable.

Matthew 10:32-34 Whoever therefore shall openly declare Me before others, I will openly declare them before My Father Who is in Heaven. But whoever rejects Me before others, I will also reject that person before My Father Who is in Heaven. Don't think that I have come to send peace on Earth.  I haven't come to send peace, but a sword.

I evaluate myself and my walk by comparison with other Christians or even with the unbelievers.

I compare myself to others and think that I am better than some—good enough.

Luke 18:11-12 The Pharisee stood and prayed this way to himself, "God, I thank You that I am not as other people are, robbers, sinful, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice in the week. I give tithes of all that I possess.

2 Corinthians 10:12 We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.

I sing, “He’s all I need,” but I don’t really believe it. He is only part of my life, not all of my life.

Luke 9:57-62 As they went in the way, a certain man said to Him, "Lord, I will follow you wherever you go." And Jesus said to him, "Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man has nowhere to lay His Head." And He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their dead: but you go and preach the Kingdom of God." And another also said, "Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go say to them, farewell, who are at home at my house." And Jesus said to him, "No man, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is well placed into the Kingdom of God."

Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your innermost mind, and with all your vital force, and with all your conscious thought. This is the first and great Commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the prophets hang on these two Commandments.

I have difficulty loving people who don’t give anything back. I love those who love me.

I love my friends but not my enemies.

There are some people I hate.

I love those who can benefit me or who are nice to me but not those who are mean to me or who are awkward, uncool, unhelpful, or not as I want them to be.

I love in order to receive rather than loving in order to give.

I understand the theory of seeing Christ in the members of the Church, but I don’t really see them that way.

Matthew 22:39-40 And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. All the law and the prophets hang on these two Commandments.

Matthew 5:43-48 You have heard that it has been said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, 'Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, so that you may be the children of your Father Who is in Heaven, for He makes His Sun rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same? And if you joyfully accept only your brothers and sisters in Christ, what do you do more than others? Don't even the tax collectors do this? Be completely mature therefore, even as your Father Who is in Heaven is completely mature.

Luke 14:12-14 Then He also said to him who asked Him, "When you make a dinner or a supper, don't call your friends, nor your brothers, neither your family, nor your rich neighbors; lest they invite you again, and a repayment will be made to you. But when you make a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, and you shall be blessed, for they cannot repay you, for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just."

I blame others for my lack of enthusiasm for God.

If certain other people were different, then I would find it easier to draw close to God.

Luke 6:36-49 Therefore, be merciful just as your Father also is merciful. Don't pronounce judgment, and you shall not be judged. Don't condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given to you, good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, which people shall give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you measure it shall be measured to you again." * And He spoke a parable to them, Can the blind lead the blind? Won't they both fall into the ditch? The disciple is not above his Master: but everyone who is equipped shall be as his or her Master. And why do you look at the speck that is in your fellow believer's eye, but don't perceive the beam that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your fellow believer, 'Fellow believer, let me pull out the speck that is in your eye when you yourself don't see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the beam out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to pull out the speck that is in your fellow believer's eye. For a good tree doesn't bring forth corrupt fruit; neither does a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For men don't gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. A good person brings forth that which is good out of the good storehouse of his or her innermost mind, and an evil person brings forth that which is evil out of the evil storehouse of his or her innermost mind. For of the abundance of the innermost mind his or her mouth speaks. And why do call you Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do the things which I say? Whoever comes to Me, and hears My utterances, and does them, I will show you to whom that person is like: That person is like a person who built a house and dug deep and laid the foundation on a rock, and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently on that house and could not shake it, for it was founded on a rock. But whoever hears and doesn't act rightly, is like a person who built a house on the ground without a foundation, against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.

When the Holy Spirit speaks, whether through the Bible or through a prophecy or whatever means, I often find that His words apply to other people rather than to me.

I have ways to keep from feeling guilty when the Holy Spirit asks me to do something that I don’t want to do or when He asks be not to do something that I want to do.

I see problems with others but not with myself.

I see others as judgmental but not myself.

Matthew 7:1-5 Don't condemn lest you be condemned. For with whatever condemnation you condemn others, you shall be condemned, and with whatever standard you measure out to others, it shall be measured to you again. And why do you look at the twig that is in your brother's or sister's eye but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye? Or how will you say to your brother or sister, 'Let me pull the twig out of your eye when a beam is in your own eye?  You hypocrite, first extract the beam out of your own eye, and then you shall see clearly to extract the twig out of your brother's or sister's eye.

I think about earthly things more than spiritual things.

I can get really excited about things that I want, but I don’t have that happen when I think of meeting with Christ the Body or meditating or reading the Bible.

I find TV shows very entertaining and I don’t find worship to be much more moving that those shows.

I don’t really find that meeting with Christ the Body draws me fully into the experience.

There are things that I would like to do and places I would like to go. These have little to do with my walk in the Spirit.

I find it difficult to spend time just praising God or just praying and listening to His Voice. I need to be doing something or watching something or socializing.

It seems awkward to praise God or even talk about real spiritual things with some of the people I like to be with.

Colossians 3:2 Direct your attention to things above, not to things on the Earth.

Philippians 3:17-20 Fellow believers, be followers together of me, and direct your attention to those who walk in this way since you have us for an example.  (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ, whose end is destruction, whose God is their innermost mind, and whose most exalted state is in their shame, who direct their minds toward earthly things.) For our citizenship is in Heaven, from which, also, we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ,

Mark 4: 3-8 "Listen!  Look!  A sower went out to sow. As he sowed, some seed fell by the way side, and the birds of the air came and ate it up. And some fell on stony ground where it didn't have much earth, and it sprang up immediately because it had no depth of earth. But when the Sun was up, it was scorched.  And, because it had no root, it withered away. And some fell into thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it gave no fruit. And other fell into good ground and yielded fruit that sprang up and increased and bore fruit, some 30, and some 60, and some 100."

Mark 4:14-20 The sower sows the utterance. And these are the ones by the way side where the utterance is sown, but when they have heard it, Satan comes immediately and takes away the utterance that was sown in their innermost minds. And likewise these are those who are sown on stony ground: who, when they have heard the utterance, immediately receive it with gladness, but have no root in themselves and so endure temporarily.  Afterward, when affliction or persecution arises for the utterance's sake, they immediately stumble and fall away. And these are those who are sown into thorns: such as hear the utterance and the cares of this age and the deceitfulness of riches and the desire for other forbidden things come in, completely choking the utterance, and it becomes unfruitful. And these are those who are sown on good ground: such as hear the utterance and receive it and bear fruit, some 30, some 60, and some 100."

How can we fulfill these things? Stand in the presence of God.

How do you stand in the Presence of God? Take time. Listen to Him. Acknowledge Him when He leads you. Spiritual senses are received by using them.
